Netlfix and Bollywood Meets for “The Bard of Blood”

Netflix and Bollywood recent meetup has been lead by Netflix founder and CEO, Reed Hastings for The Bard of Blood.

Netflix and Bollywood

The global village has promoted understanding and love between cultures all around the world. When we talk about culture, we cannot leave out the entertainment industry. South Asian filmmakers have impressed audiences everywhere with their beautiful and gripping stories at prestigious film festivals. Their magic cannot be ignored and now everyone wants to see what they’ll do next as the Netflix and Bollywood meets.

Netflix founder and CEO, Reed Hastings, is one of millions who has fallen for the charms of South Asian cinema. It’s not just the filmmakers but the bright upcoming South Asian authors who have caught his attention. He was thrilled at the potential of South Asian stories which have captured the hearts of viewers globally over the years. He desired to present Netflix as a platform to showcase the local talent and give authors a chance to tell their tales. This means that book to film adaptations will be opening the door to Netflix and Bollywood.

As the netflix and bollywood meets again, Reed Hastings has teamed up with none other than the King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan, to turn this dream into a reality. The Indian superstar’s company, Red Chillies Entertainment, will partner with Netflix to bring the best of Bollywood to everyone’s go-to entertainment channel. This is only the beginning because Reed Hastings has big plans for this match made in Heaven. Netflix’s representative at the Mumbai Film Festival revealed a glimpse of their future plans. According to Hollywood Reporter, Netflix wishes to release at least five to six original Indian series every year! Looks like there’s a lot to look forward to whether you’re a Bollywood fan or a Netflix addict.

The original Netflix series, Shahrukh Khan has just signed up for is an adaptation of a novel by an upcoming author, Bilal Siddiqi. He has previously written books like The Stardust Affair and The Kiss of Life: How a Superhero and My Son Defeated Cancer. The book which inspired the Netflix series is called The Bard of Blood. It was published in 2015 by Penguin India. It possesses elements of fiction, mystery and crime. The story revolves around a disgraced RAW agent who was dishonorably discharged from this post due to a failed mission. The mission concerned the support of Balochi rebels in Pakistan during their uprising against the government.

Kabir Anand’s past haunted him but he managed to build a life for himself as a professor of literature in Mumbai in the present. However, fate intervened forcing him to return as a RAW agent and face his fears. He learned that the capital had fallen into chaos after a former RAW leader was murdered. The assassin was no ordinary killer but by a double agent with nefarious intentions towards India. His actions were all part of an intricate plan to ignite war on a global scale. Now, Anand’s knowledge and skill are needed by his country. He must track down the killer and find the one’s pulling the strings before it’s too late to save everyone.

The Bard of Blood certainly promises plenty of thrill and action. Tensions on both sides of the Line of Control have put RAW and ISI on high alert in recent weeks. The political background of this original series that is linked so closely to the current situation will definitely turn heads. That’s surely in the favor of the filmmakers. There’s always intense interest in any production which sheds light on Indo-Pak relations. Although the plot is totally fiction, there are some truths added from the Baloch uprising to spice it up.

Needless to say, South Asians won’t be the only ones eager to check out The Bard of Blood when it is finally released on Netflix. The West, the US in particular, has always taken a keen interest in Indo-Pak affairs and Americans enjoy glimpses into South Asia through film productions.

This is not the first time Netflix and Bollywood have announced an Indian original series. Sacred Games, based on the novel by Vikram Chandra, is currently being filmed under the supervision of renowned directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. This is also based on corruption and crime which the theme Netflix has apparently chosen for its first batch of Indian original series. There’s a lot more in store for audiences.
